4th October 2009- Club Dance and Awards

Hopefully those in attendance will agree that this year's event was a great success. Thank you to all who made it happen (you know who you are) and to everyone for turning out to support the club. It shows the team spirit is still there. I brought along some family who are not involved in athletics who went home singing the club's praises. Congratulations to Whitemoss' newest honorary member, Frank Smith, and thank you for providing the special guest, Word Triathlon participant Shona Girdwood. As big a name as we've ever had at a dance.

The club championship results can be viewed via the Performance Lists page but here are the other award winners.

Junior Female Athlete of the Year- Emily Craig

Junior Male Athlete of the Year- Jamie Gemmell

Senior Female Athlete of the Year- Lorraine Boyd

Senior Male Athlete of the Year- Zach Bryson

Athletes' Athlete of the Year- Zach Bryson

Endeavour Award- John Robertson

Honorary Membership- Frank Smith

Last but not least, best wishes to Lorna Sankey in her new life in Australia. Keep in touch.

11th September 2009- September Bulletin

Available here are bullet point minutes of the committee meeting held in late August. Some important news is contained therein so it's worth a read. Copies will also be posted on the noticeboard and in the portacabin.

21st August 2009- New Membership Scheme

At recent committee meetings and as set out in the Power Point document below, the committee have been agreeing on a new membership scheme. This involves members paying a monthly direct debit payment to the club rather than a one off annual fee. The intention is to pass the benefit onto the athletes in several ways, such as being able to further subsidise buses for league meetings, cut the cost of kit etc. The scheme mirrors that used by other sports clubs such as swimming.

Letters have been posted out by first class mail today to everyone on the database. If you do not receive a letter by 1st September, please contact either Steven Whyteside (steven.whyteside@talktalk.net) or Alan Owen (Alan.Owen@mottmac.com) as soon as possible.

15th August 2009- Committee Minutes

It has been agreed, to keep members fully informed of happenings at the club, to publish committee meeting minutes in bullet point format. This will show the main points discussed and decisions taken. The minutes of the last meeting on 5th August are here in Power Point format. Any questions can be raised with myself or any other committee member.

7th August 2009- Upcoming Open Graded Meetings

The summer is not over yet. There are various opportunities left to improve your personal bests. Here are the details of two upcoming open graded meetings.

12th August: John Wright Sports Centre, East Kilbride. A wide range of events are on offer. The timetable has been added to the Events Diary page of this website.

19th August: Dam Park, Ayr. This is a meeting with medals available. Again, the timetable is on the Events diary page.

Results shall be added to the website once they are known.

26th July 2009- General Round Up

To the names of Allan Scott, Craig Elder, Erin Leggate, Emma Brown, David Robertson and Iain McEwan, add the names of Nicky McMurtrie and Zach Bryson to the list of Whitemoss athletes who have gone on to achieve international recognition. Both competed for the Scottish Schools team this month at the Schools International in Antrim, Northern Ireland and now represent Scotland at the Celtic Games this Saturday.

Those who have followed Nicky's progress will know this is one of a growing number of honours for the 15 year old who started out at Whitemoss as an under 9.  For Zach, this is the first and no doubt more should follow. Both compete in the under 18 age group, Nicky in the discus and Zach the 4x100m relay.

With one or two other talents beginning to shine in the younger age groups, the club has a lot to be proud of at the moment. Turn outs at the open grades have been encouragingly good. Speaking of which, there are 2 more coming up, at Linwood this Wednesday and our own track on 12th August. See the club noticeboard and the Events Diary page of this site for more.

Finally for now, the club championships are on Sunday 13th September and the dance on Saturday 19th September. Watch these pages and the forum for details. There could be quite a few candidates  for the various awards this year.

19th July 2009- Bargain Kit

We have recent taken delivery of some Scottish Athletics Hi Tec kit comprising, amongst other things, t shirts and shorts. These are available for sale for a bargain £5 and can be found in the portacabin on training nights. It will simply be first come first served so do not miss out and help boost the club finances in the process. There is some lovely stuff. If you're not fast, you will be last.

7th July 2009- Frank

Sadly, a short time after taking up the chairman reigns, Frank has had to step off the saddle due to understandable health concerns. He still achieved a lot during his short tenure, getting the portacabin cleaned and decorated in particular. Thanks again Frank and remain a friend and visitor.

This is of course means the chairman position becomes vacant again. We are probably getting too near the AGM to do much now (how time flies) but bear in mind a willing candidate is needed sooner rather than later.

3rd July 2009- Another Scottish International From Whitemoss

Hearty congratulations go to Zach Bryson who has been selected to represent Scottish Schools in the Schools Home International Match in Antrim, Northern Ireland on 18th July. This is Zach's debut Scottish vest and is just reward for some impressive performances so far this year up to and including 400m.

Zach joins 2nd claim Whitemossonian Nicky McMurtrie and Emma Brown, former member and recent Childrens Games medallist, on the trip to Northern Ireland. Naturally we wish them all the very best.

Above, second left- Zach Bryson, Whitemoss' newest Scottish international.

24th June 2009- Hello Again

Phew, it's been a busy month for myself and the club. Reports suggest the Cancer Research Relay for Life went very well with a healthy 3 figure sum raised. From what I've read, we won the sack race as well.

A lot has been going on and the intention is to a full June round up on the results page over the next week or so. Please bear with me. If you find any results missing as they appear, of course, please let me know.

30th May 2009- New Chairman

It is a pleasure to report that the vacant chairman position is now filled. Missing things so much following retirement, Frank Smith has taken up the reins. The Committee page on this site has been updated accordingly. A secretary is still sought. Any takers?

22nd May 2009- CSSAL Bus

This Sunday 24th May is the next meeting at Linwood. If selected, the bus leaves the sport centre at 10.15am, returning at approximately 5.30pm. Do try to support the club by using the transport being made available.

13th May 2009- Womens 10k, Whitemoss AAC Online Exclusive

Whitemoss youngster Lorraine Boyd (pictured below) was among the 10,700 finishers at the Womens 10k at Bellahouston Park, Glasgow on 10th May. 18 year old Lorraine was taking part with her school, Craigholme and, like so many of the participants, was raising money for a worthy cause. Better known as a multi eventer, this was considerably overdistance for Lorraine who battled round the course in a time of 1:12:50 to claim a well deserved medal.

Speaking to me the following night, Lorraine said "In doing the race, I walked one kilometre, ran a kilmometre and so on because my calves were tight. I was also not as fit as I wanted to be but delighted to be photographed on the front page of the Evening Times  pullout."

When asked how her legs felt, she replied "pretty sore, especially with the hills." I am familiar with that feeling. Well done Miss Boyd.

9th May 2009- Lanarkshire Relay Championships and Relay For Life

Having spoken to the organiser, Walter Ewing today, I can advise that the first race is scheduled for 7.15pm with entries being taken from 6pm onwards. This event is at our own track. Teams to be formed on the night. The club will pay the entry fees. We will also be running the tuck shop on the night and serving teas and coffees from the portacabin.

Even if not competing, do come along and lend the competitors your support. It will be appreciated greatly.

Secondly, the club has again entered a team for the Cancer Research 24 Hour Relay for Life. For details, see Mark Stringer's message on the Whitemoss Bebo page.

21st April 2009- CSSAL

Further to the item below, the bus for Sunday is booked for 10am Make sure you are at the sports centre before then. If you cannot attend, please let either Mark or Cathy know as soon as possible to allow the chance for a replacement to fill the team sheet.

16th April- CSSAL Division One Match One

Note the above is at Grangemouth on 26th April with a 12 noon start. Letters are now being handed out to athletes  selected for the team. Watch the front page of the website for the bus time. Note bus places will be limited but various others will also be taking cars. In addition, check the Frequently Asked Questions page to see some simple ways in which you can help out on the day.

The Mens League and Womens League teams kick off this weekend. Watch the forum and this site for reports.

5th April 2009- Additional Training

The clocks are back, the lighter nights are here. Taking advantage of this, Allan Boyd has announced some additional long jump training on Wednesday 8th April from 6.30pm. One session took place last week so Allan is repeating the exercise. This may become a regular occurrence but keep your eyes on the forum for the latest.

On the same evening simultaneously, Willie Sutherland has the endurance group which he also takes on a Monday. These sessions are on each Wednesday with occasional assistance from myself, Steven Whyteside and/or John Robertson. Willie has a growing fan club of around 9 athletes so far.

Both the above are open to all athletes from every age group, perhaps apart from under 9.
