24th June 2007- Mens and Womens Leagues, East Kilbride 10k

On a very busy day, Whitemoss were in action on three fronts. The mens team were competing at Grangemouth in the second competition of four. Flash floods more akin to the Amazon did nothing to stir up any enthusiasm and delayed the start of the field events. Things though, subsided for the track programme commencing at 1pm. Second place was achieved, 100 points clear of third. We are now clear in second and looking strong for promotion back to the top tier. Click here to read the team manager's report. I'll give a special mention to Stuart Jamieson who made his debut for the mens team, competing in the long jump and helping the 4 x 400m relay team to third place.

Scotstoun was equally wet for Team West in the Womens League but, in a marked improvement from before, the team were victors on the day. Results for Whitemoss competitors are here.

Much earlier in the day, Julie Whyeside participated in the East Kilbride 10k Road Race, run in conjunction with the half marathon. Avoiding the worst of the weather, Julie clocked 42:37 to be not only 38th of 889 finishers but 3rd woman overall and first under 20.

June 2007- Schools Results

2nd- Scottish Secondary Schools Pentahlon Championships

Congratulations to Nicky McMurtrie who, competing for Claremont High, finished 4th in the girls under 15 pentathlon. This competition involved 75m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot putt and 800m. Nicky was against girls up to 2 years older so this is a very good performance. She hopes to make the medals next year when representing the new Calderglen High which opens in October.

A number of Whitemoss athletes were competing for their schools in this two day championship. Here is how they fared in sweltering conditions.

20th May 2007- Central and South of Scotland League Division One Match Two, Grangemouth

Whitemoss are now 5th afer two matches with 8 points, level with Ayr Seaforth and ahead of Law and District, Central and Airdrie Harriers. I was absent due to a family function but was very pleased to see our improved result on the day. At the top, there is a three  way tie for the league title between Kilbarchan, Giffnock North and City of Edinburgh. In the last competition on our own track on 5th August, we have 4th place to play for. LET'S HAVE A BIG TURNOUT, FILL THE TEAM SHEET AND FINISH STRONGLY. YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!

15th May 2007- Lanarkshire AAA Relay Championships, East Kilbride

Whitemoss fared very well in this competition, winning 4 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals. The participating clubs comprised ourselves, our neighbours East Kilbride AC, Larkhall, Law and District, Shettleston Harriers, Airdrie Harriers, Cambuslang Harriers and a small squad from Hamilton Harriers. As well as the traditional 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m races,  we had the novelty of watching a 4 x 200m relay and what I found to be very exciting 3 x 800m races. We were treated to Euan's dulcet tones over the tannoy as announcer for the night and the club organised a tuck shop to raise money for the Cancer Research 24 hour Relay for Life.  It was a late end to an enjoyable night, the last race concluding at around 9.15pm. This is a new initiative organised for the first time. Further details of the rules and prizes on offer can be obtained from the following link.

29th April 2007- Central and South of Scotland League Division One Match One, Wishaw

The first competition in 2007 took place at the new track in Wishaw on a sunny but very blustery afternoon. Thanks are in order for Cathy Robertson who stepped into the team managers breach with the absence of Elaine Grant (personal reasons) and Sylvia Totten (on her holidays). The individual results are not yet available but, after a hard fought afternoon’s competition, the table looks like this.

Kilbarchan, 672 match points

Giffnock North, 650
Law and District, 561
City of Edinburgh, 549.5
Ayr Seaforth, 517
Whitemoss, 492
Airdrie Harriers, 412.5
Central, 364

This can definitely be improved upon in the two meetings to come, at Grangemouth on 20th May and, don’t forget, on home turf on 5th August.

28th April 2007- Knockdhu International and Junior International, Larne, Northern Ireland

As the name may suggest, this is a mountain race championship. Well done to Laura McCord who competed for Scotland in the Junior Women’s race, taking 5th place in a time of 30:25. This continues her brief but so far very impressive record in hill races. Keep the good work going.

22nd April 2007

Whitemoss were in action on three fronts on the above date. Firstly, the Mens League squad put last year's disappointment of relegation from Division One behind them with a strong opening performance at Grangemouth. The team were second, over 80 points clear of the third placed club and only 18 points behind the newly formed Victoria Park-City of Glasgow AC. Follow this link to read team manager Keith Stoddart's take on the day's proceedings. The results from the day are here on a spreadsheet (xls format). Note just one or two minor discrepancies. In the 5000m, for Alan Cullie, read my name and the B string runner was Martin Duthie who stepped in 30 minutes after his 1500m.

Secondly, the following Whitemoss were part of the Team West squad taking part in the Womens League at Meadowbank:- Lorraine Boyd, Lynsey Greenfield, Dawn Robertson, Lynsey Ferguson, Katie Murphy, Lauren Moonie, Laura Gosling and Penny Mitchell. The team were 6th with 362.5 points. Edinburgh are the early pacesetters after winning with 472.5. Here are the full results in PDF format.

Last, but most definitely not least, with a report on the UK Sportshall Athletics Final in Birmingham, I hand over to club secretary, Euan.

"South Lanarkshire Under 13 Girls did Scotland proud. They were easily the loudest and apart from football & rugby matches I have rarely seen so many Scotland flags.

Only 2 medals on the day but the standards were very high. Despita a massive throw of 10m 53 Nicky only won Silver in the Shot Putt. Elena McKinlay threw 6m 85 Emma Brown won bronze in the High Jump. The relay team with Nicky & Fiona Thomson "which cruised home in the Scottish final" could only finish 4th such was the high standard.

It was a great day, the kids were treated like stars. With a March past Opening ceremony, events being shown on the huge screens and medallists being interviewed by the press afterwards. Full credit to Jim Goldie who as Team Manager deserves a huge thanks. I know he reads this so Well done Jim."

I can see many more busy weekends like this between now and August...

15th April 2007- Nithsdale AC Open Graded Meeting, David Keswick Centre, Dumfries

A large party from Whitemoss made the 150 mile round trip to Dumfries and Galloway for this early season competition. More than 30 club athletes competed here which was an excellent turnout. This was also a medals meeting and a considerable number were taken back on the coach heading north late in the afternoon.

We were graced with glorious sunshine for the entire day which always makes things that bit more pleasant. The host club must be commended for their fabulous hospitality. Their tuck shop serving hot and cold food, tea, coffee, soft drinks and sweets makes fixtures in this neck of the woods among the best we attend and the trip all the more worthwhile. Photos, complete with amusing captions, are on Euan McMurtries site, accessible via "Photo Gallery."
