30th December 2007- Cambuslang Harriers Down By The River 10k and 3k

The courses were flat and conditions were dry and mild for the second running of this event by our near neighbours. There was a one mile trek though from Cambuslang Sports Club to the start.

In the 3k, Craig Mooney was first under 11. He won a selection box which I collected for him and his Dad then let me keep. Lauren Mooney also took part in the race.

In the 10k, I toiled to a new PB while Gary Mooney put in an excellent performance, dipping well under the 40 minute mark.

A nice gesture from the hosts was the provision of hot mince pies, tea and coffee back at their sports club afterwards.

3km
Craig Mooney- 12:45, first under 11
Lauren Mooney- 13:09

10km, 93 finishers
8th- Stuart Gibson, 34:13
33rd- Gary Mooney, 38:51

8th December 2007- West District Cross Country Championships, Royal Academy, Irvine

Let's make no bones about it. This event took place in bleak, wet, freezing, miserable conditions. The course was exposed to a biting cold wind at various points but at least it was okay underfoot and the hills weren't too bad. They also did a good spread of hot food and drinks back at the school. The fact by the time I got there there was a 10 minute wait for soup says it all.

A mention also to under 17 Gary Mooney who finished 2nd in the St Andrews Hospice 6km road race. Not content with his cross country exploits the day before, Alistair Stewart also ran, finishing in a time of 26:04.

11th November 2007- Kilmarnock Harriers Cross Country Races

Whitemoss have supported this event for a number of years now and this was no different. Races for under 11s through to seniors took place in Deans Castle Country Park which provided the setting for a gruelling traditional cross country course. Mud, leaves, overgrown trails, loose branches and some nasty climbs, this one had it all. At the prizegiving, the hosts only apologised that it didn't rain. According to Steven Whyteside, an even steeper hill had been removed from the course. The ones that remained were enough.

The club's form age group, under 11 boys, won gold in the team event while Julie Whyteside was 3rd senior and 4th overall. It has to be said though there weren't any bad performances. Here is the full results list.

Meanwhile, Scott Davidson continued his comeback with a vengeance with a long trip south to the Stranraer 10km road race. It proved worthwhile as Scott claimed 6th place in a time of 35 and a half minutes. Super stuff.

27th October 2007- Scottish Athletics National Cross Country Relay Championships, Cumbernauld

There were some great perfomances from Whitemoss at Cumbernauld Park in Cumbernauld. The event brought clubs from the West, East and North Districts together to the same venue. It was a superb afternoon of racing with a fantastic atmosphere. Stuff like this should be televised. Here is a rundown of the Whitemoss fortunes.

Young females race, 64 full teams
14th: Whitemoss A; Kirsty Jamieson, 11:05; Lauren Mooney, 11:02; Rachel Barlas, 11:03

19th: Whitemoss B; Stephanie Curran, 10:50 (4th on the first leg :o); Sarah Millar, 11:54; Laura McCord, 10:48

Not to be outdone were the boys.

Young males race, 66 full teams
25th: Whitemoss A; Craig Whyteside, 10:33; Euan Walker, 10:10; Stuart Jamieson, 9:23

45th: Whitemoss B; Nicholas Phillips, 10:33; Ross McCord, 11:07; John Robertson, 10:08

In the senior race, I did 1st leg for the Calderglen team that finished 35th out of 96 teams.

Congratulations to all.

26th October 2007- Run 4 It 3k on the Green Series, Glasgow

Well done to Scott Davidson who launched his comeback from injury/lack of fitness/holidays at this race. Scott finished 2nd in a time of 9:41 behind Conor McNulty of Kilbarchan. Scott has shown considerable potential in the past and can boast in particular a 1:53 personal best for 800m. Let's hope this performance is a sign of things to come.

13th October 2007- Scottish Athletics West District Cross Country Relay, Irvine

We are now officially into the winter fixture calendar but there was little evidence of needing wooly jumpers down the Ayrshire coast. Irvine looked beautiful in bright and, dare I say it, glorious warm sunshine. Why couldn't we have had days like this in July and August? Climate change they call it apparently.

Anyway, the course which took competitors up and down their fair share of hills and through the sand dunes for good measure provided a good test while possibly suiting track runners more due to the firmness underfoot.

Whitemoss had four teams of three entered, two in the young females race and another two contesting the young males event. I ran the second leg for the Calderglen A team as well in the seniors race. Great fun it was too!

Thanks go to Thom Jamieson, Paul White, Steven Whyteside, Julie Whyteside and two surprise supporters, Robert and Lea Leggate, for foregoing some minor football match being shown on TV to lend their encouragement on the day.

Young Females (26 teams)

7th: Kirsty Jamieson, 10:32; Lauren Mooney, 10:18; Rachel Barlas, 10:25

9th: Stephanie Curran, 10:13; Sarah Miller, 10:50, Laura McCord, 10:26

Young Males (42 teams)

20th: Scott Whiteside, 10:32, Euan Walker, 9:28; Stuart Jamieson, 8:54

26th: Nicholas Phillips, 10:02; Ross McCord, 9:51; John Robertson, 9:47
