13th and 14th September 2008- Scottish Combined Events Championships, Perth

Whitemoss brought the curtain down on a jam packed 2008 summer season on the east coast. Star of the day  was under 11 Sarah McDonald who took gold in the under 11 girls triathlon consisting of the 100m (14.83 seconds), long jump (3.77m) and shot putt (4.89m). This was just reward after a busy summer  for the young athlete competing in track and field competition.

Elsewhere, Alistair Stoddart was 7th in the under 11 boys triathlon following long jump (3.17m), 100m (16.78 seconds) and shot putt (4.52m). Jamie Gemmell participated in the under 15 boys pentathlon but sadly had to withdraw from the final event, 800m, following an injury. In a tight competition, he was only 123 points off 4th place which, in multi events money, is very little.

There were two debutants in the under 13 girls pentathlon. With a large entry of 22, Emma Frame finished in an excellent 8th place. Lauren McSkimming also found the experience to her liking, finishing 18th but only a handful of points away from a higher placing.

P.S. Since writing the above, thanks to Cathy Robertson for alerting me to two more Whitemoss participants who were incorrectly listed as East Kilbride athletes. Firstly, Alison Stewart was 5th in the under 11s competition with the following:- 100m (15.63 seconds), shot putt (3.64m), long jump (4.03m). Secondly Emily Craig was 8th with:- 100m (16.88 seconds), shot putt (2.95m), long jump (3.16m). Well done to all our athletes. At least I know someone is reading this!

Shettleston Harriers and Linwood Open Graded Meetings

Some of the club's athletes took the opportunity of some extra competition at these meetings hosted by our friends in the east end of Glasgow. On the 19th,  Iain, Craig and Jamie McEwan comprised half of the 100m heat one. Iain finished 2nd in 11.4 seconds with Craig 5th (11.8) and Jamie 6th (12.0). One week later, Laura Gosling ran the 200m, finishing 5th in heat 2 with 31.6 seconds. The under 15 athlete also took the opportunity to improve her shot putt in a more relaxed competitive environment than the Scottish event two days earlier, throwing an impressive 7.27m.

The next night, under 13 Alisdair Stewart did his full quota of events at Linwood. The young athlete competed in the 100m (16.40 seconds), 1500m (5:29.99) and long jump (3.83m).

10th August 2008- Central and South of Scotland League Division One Match Three, East Kilbride

For the second successive year, we were handed a meeting on our own track. For the second successive year, it was blowing a gale. For the second successive year, it rained....though not as much as previously.

A tremendous effort saw us finish 3rd on the day and 4th overall in the league which was unthinkable back in April. Mark Stringer and Cathy Robertson have done a tremendous job as team managers but so have you, the athletes, parents and helpers. This means we have now been in division one for eight consecutive years and have finished no lower than 5th in that time. Well done one and all.

6th August 2008- Grangemouth Open Graded Meeting

Young Sarah McDonald continued to set an example to her fellow Whitemoss athletes by keeping up a prolific summer of competition. At this event, she competed in the 100m, finishing 2nd in her heat with a time of 15.12 seconds. She then finished 8th out of 12 runners in heat 5 of the 800m, clocking 2:51.1. One to watch in the future methinks.

23rd July 2008- South Lanarkshire Open Graded Meeting, East Kilbride

A dry, clear, midsummer evening, a huge entry and over 3 hours of tremendous athletics. That could be one way of summing up the recent open graded meeting at our own track. Whitemoss athletes answered the rallying cry tremendously with 17 members doing at least one event and numerous other club personnel officiating. Hopefully the first timers enjoyed the experience. Please be reassured, not all meetings are this busy or run until 10.15pm. I have trawled the results and bring them to you now. Positions given are those achieved in the athlete's own heat.

30th July- Linwood Sports Complex Open Graded Meeting

The results from the extraordinarily busy open grade at East Kilbride have yet to materialise but, in the meantime, three Whitemoss members took part in an almost as crowded meeting at Linwood. Just the eight 100m and seven 800m heats at this one! Learning from the experience one week previously, heats started with the youngest athletes progressing up to the oldest. Under 11 Sarah McDonald and under 13 Lauren McSkimming both had busy nights. Lauren was 6th in her 100m with 15.93 seconds while Sarah was 4th in hers clocking 14.90.

Each girl also ran a 200m, competing in the same heat. Sarah was 3rd in a terrific time of 30.19 seconds while Lauren finished 6th with 33.05. They diversified in the field though. Lauren did the long jump, leaping 3.38m, and Sarah recorded a throw of 4.91m in the shot putt.

The third competitor alas was me. In my preparation for the Scottish Senior 5000m on 30th/31st August, I claimed 3rd in my 800m with a new personal best of 2:04.58. It was yet another 3rd place finish following similar results on the road at the Saltcoats 4.5 mile race on Fair Monday and the Aberdour Donkey Brae 7 miles 8 days earlier.

13th July 2008- Scottish Athletics Mens League Division 1 Match 4, Grangemouth

Whitemoss made a monumental leap forward here by staying in Division 1 of, what has to be said, was a very competitive league this year. Going into the final meeting, Giffnock North were as good as down but any one of up to 5 other clubs could have joined them. Shettleston wheeled out their Eritrean contingent to pull clear and Ayr Seaforth put in a strong effort to overhaul us. It wasn't to be though as the Ayrshire outfit finished on 14 points. We had 15 while Pitreavie were 5th on 16. Division 1 athletics has been secured for 2009.

11th June 2008- Grangemouth Open Graded Meeting

Two athletes from the club competed at a deserted Grangemouth in a meeting devoid of any real atmosphere. The close proximity of the Scottish Schools Championships and Scottish Under 20 and 23 Championships certainly did not assist the turnout. Firstly, Sarah McDonald finished 2nd in her 100m heat in 14.78 seconds, only being pipped on the line after leading for a large chunk of the race. Later on, I was 2nd in a 3 man 3000m in an under par 9:34.25.

28th May 2008- Linwood Open Graded Meeting

Well done to under 11 girl Alison Stewart who was the sole Whitemoss competitor at this open grade. Alison followed up her two excellent results at Grangemouth three days earlier, 2nd place in the 150m and 3rd in the A string long jump with a 100m time of 15.97 seconds. A very impressive time for that age group.

25th May 2008- CSSAL Division One Match Two, Grangemouth

If Linwood last time out was bad then we surpassed ourselves in the second meeting. An almost full team sheet and some determined, gutsy performances saw us finish a superb second place on the day behind Kilbarchan. This lifts us up to 4th place overall in the table. A special mention must go to those who took part in unfamiliar events and obtained some superb results. The timetable no doubt suited us as we placed well in most of the more technical events, such as hurdles, high jump and the throws. Credit for that goes to the coaches. Praise must also go to Mark Stringer and Cathy Robertson for their continued hard work as team managers.

The third meeting is at the John Wright on 10th August. A healthy turnout, as well as dry weather if anyone recalls last year, is hoped for. A similar result will certainly stand us in good stead. Meanwhile, click here for the Grangemouth results. This is a Microsoft Excel file. If required, Excel viewer can be downloaded from the links page of this website.

17th and 18th May 2008- Scottish Athletics Mens and Womens Leagues

Match 2 of the Mens League was on a Saturday with Meadowbank apparently unavailable the following day. Funnily enough, I enjoyed the meeting much more due to the change. We were boosted this time by the addition of Stuart Jamieson who performed admirably both in the 400m and 4x400m relay. Paul White also enjoyed a swim in filling the 3000m steeplechase B string. He was reluctant to begin with but is quoted as saying afterwards that he rather enjoyed it. The team as a whole were excellent in showing the benefit of having two competitors in almost every event.  We were 4th with 264 points, only 16 adrift of Shettleston. Amazingly, we are now 3rd overall but it's extremely tight as you will see below.

Overall
1st Arbroath, 16
2nd Central, 14
3rd WHITEMOSS, 9 (490 match points)
4th Shettleston, 9 (488)
5th eq Victoria Park, 9 (481)
5th eq Pitreavie, 9 (481)
7th Ayr, 4
8th Giffnock, 1

Two more meetings and we are in danger of not only staying in division one but doing so in some style. GO WHITEMOSS!! Read the team manager's report here.

The following day at Grangemouth, Team West continued to acquit themselves well in the Womens League. They finished 4th aided by the efforts of Marie Claire Martin, Nicky McMurtrie, Megan Owen, Julie Whyteside and Laura Gosling.

13th May 2008- Lanarkshire Relay Championships, East Kilbride

Whitemoss had 17 teams competing in the various races on our home track. A healthy number of medals were accumulated, including 5 golds in a competition which provided extra race practice for some and, for others, a chance to stake a claim for a place in the CSSAL league teams. Many thanks to the athletes who turned out, as well as the track judges, announcer and starter who were all wonderful.

The results are here in PDF format.

10th and 11th May- Scottish West District and Closed Senior Championships

This championship took place at Meadowbank, unless you were a pole vaulter in which case you were shipped over to Grangemouth. 16 athletes from the club took part over the weekend, yielding 6 medals, numerous good performances and, in the cases of Lynsey Greenfield (100m), Fiona Thomson (long jump) and Elena McKinlay (shot putt), some near misses for medals. My thanks go to Paul White for typing the following results up. If any are wrong, blame him.

27th April 2008- CSSAL Division One Match One, Linwood

The club continued their unbroken spell in the top division since 2000 at Linwood. Unfortunately, we struggled a bit, lack of numbers in the under 15s and under 17s being the main problem. The unscrutinised scores have us in 7th place as shown below.

1st- Kilbarchan, 696 points; 2nd- Giffnock North, 568; 3rd- Shettleston Harriers, 529; 4th- Ayr Seaforth, 528; 5th- Law and District, 436; 6th- East Kilbride, 421; 7th- Whitemoss, 386; 8th- Central, 336.

While disappointing, this is by no means a disaster and is not a reflection at all on those who competed for us who did themselves proud. As you will see, a small number of points will make a big difference. What's required is for us to stick together for the next two meetings. Next up is Grangemouth on 25th May.

The individual male results are here and the females here. Note that these are PDF files and may take a minute or so to open.

20th April 2008- Scottish Mens League and Scottish Womens League

Whitemoss were in action on two fronts. Firstly, at a very blustery Grangemouth, the began their return to Division 1 of the Mens League with a very promising 5th place finish. At least another two results like that from the other three meetings and we might just survive this time. The next one is a Saturday at Meadowbank, 17th May.

Along the motorway, at a not much warmer Meadowbank, Lorraine Boyd (400m hurdles, 100m hurdles, triple jump), Lynsey Greenfield (100m, 4 x 100m relay), Nicky McMurtrie (shot putt, javelin), Meghan Owen (shot putt), Stephanie Curran (800m) and Julie Whyteside (1500m) helped Team West finish 4th in the first Womens League match. This is the second year that Whitemoss have supported this league and, so far, it has proven successful. Click here for the full results.
