22nd June 2007- An Example To Us All
It is often said in football that the days of the one club player are all but gone, the game being more about personal financial gain than owing any sense of loyalty. Happily in the amateur world of athletics, there are those who dedicate themselves to the one set up and Whitemoss is fortunate to count such people among their number.
The month of June is something of a milestone for Team McEwan as they are affectionately known. With the exception of myself and Alan Potts, who both left for a spell before returning, the family comprising Iain Senior, Anne, Iain Junior, Craig and Jamie are Whitemoss' longest serving members. Iain Junior made his debut a remarkable 12 years ago this month following a primary school championships. His time with the club was interrupted only by a 6 month university exchange visit to Prague. Jamie and Craig joined in June 1997 on their eighth birthdays and reach their milestone 18ths on the 27th. Iain Senior first competed in June 1998 in a veterans 100m and 800m when he was 40. He has since gone on to be a combined events coach and regular competitor.
The level of loyalty shown here should not be underestimated or taken for granted. As said, it is now 12 years since a McEwan first donned Whitemoss colours. If more people can even devote a fraction of their time each the club will continue to remain in safe hands for another dozen years and beyond.
